LITTLE ROCK — Gov. Asa Hutchinson and the Arkansas Department of Education are pleased to announce the winners of the 2018-2019 #ARKidsCanCode Enrollment Contest.
Six Arkansas schools are being recognized for their efforts to encourage students to enroll in high school computer science courses.
* Bentonville High School in Bentonville
* Mountain Home Career Academies in Mountain Home
* Greenwood Freshman Academy in Greenwood
* Kirby High School in Kirby
* Academies of West Memphis in West Memphis
* Cutter-Morning Star High School in Hot Springs
“I am delighted by the outstanding number of educators and schools around the state that have embraced the Computer Science Initiative,” Gov. Asa Hutchinson said. “The number of students taking computer science classes has skyrocketed since the initiative was launched. I am confident that these students are receiving the best computer science education available in the country and will be prepared for the jobs of the future. I commend them and all the educators for their hard work.”
ADE announced the contest in August 2018 to honor schools for their efforts to promote computer science education. All public schools with students enrolled in computer science courses were eligible. ADE’s Division of Elementary and Secondary Education Office of Computer Science provided the funds for the awards.
Winners are being recognized in the following categories.
* Schools with fewer than 1,000 students:
* Greenwood Freshman Academy will receive $10,000 for having the highest number and highest percentage of students enrolled in computer science courses.
* Kirby High School will receive $5,000 for having the largest percentage increase of students enrolled in computer science courses.
* Schools with 1,000 or more students:
* Mountain Home Career Academies will receive $5,000 for having the highest percentage of students enrolled in computer science courses.
* Bentonville High School will receive $5,000 for having the highest number of students enrolled in computer science classes.
* Academies of West Memphis will receive $5,000 for having the largest percentage increase of students enrolled in computer science courses.
In addition, Cutter-Morning Star High School won the random drawing prize package worth $5,000 that was announced in 2018. The school can use the grant to support future growth of computer science classes. Schools received entries in this random drawing for their high enrollment numbers, as well as for submitting information regarding how they encouraged students to enroll in computer science courses this past school year.
