Kirby School District is actively monitoring all information regarding the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and school closures. While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 in Pike County at this time, we are actively preparing to respond appropriately should the issue transpire for our school and school district. In the event that an outbreak does occur, it is possible that school will be closed for a period of time. As with any school closure, advanced notification is always preferred so that we can provide families with ample time to secure childcare. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee we will have prior knowledge before the need to make a closure announcement.
The Department of Education recently increased each school district’s AMI days to 10 days maximum. Currently, we have only used one day. We will be using the remaining 9 days in the event of an emergency if school is closed. This is not to suggest or predict that nine or more days will be missed. Packets for AMI Days 1-5 will be sent home beginning of the week next week as a precaution. We will be preparing additional materials for days 6-10. Kirby School District is also 1:1 and we will resort to online learning as an additional resource to the AMI packets if we determine it is needed for the older students.
As of now, the best protection we can take is to approach this as if we are trying to avoid contracting the seasonal flu. Please remember the following:
- -Avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- -Always wash hands for at least 20 seconds
- -Cover coughs and sneezes
- -Do not share food or drinks
- -Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces
- -Do not return to school after sickness until 24 hours free of fever without the use of fever reducing medication and 24 hours free of vomiting.

As we monitor the situation, we will continue to receive guidance and resources from the ADE, CDC, and ADH to assist us in providing an appropriate response. Providing a safe environment for our students, faculty, and staff is and always will be our number one priority.
